"Le Lincoln Memorial est un monument en l'honneur d'Abraham Lincoln, 16e président des États-Unis, inauguré en 1922 dans le West Potomac Park, dans le prolongement du National Mall à Washington, D.C.

Grand bâtiment de marbre blanc à la forme d'un temple dorique grec, il abrite une statue monumentale d'Abraham Lincoln assis, et les inscriptions de deux de ses plus célèbres discours. Le Lincoln Memorial a été le lieu d'où ont été prononcés plusieurs discours dont le célèbre « I have a dream » de Martin Luther King, le 28 août 1963, clôturant la Marche vers Washington pour le travail et la liberté.

Comme d'autres monuments du National Mall, dont les proches Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, et National World War II Memorial, le Lincoln Memorial est administré par le service des parcs nationaux américains."

La pièce centrale est flanquée de deux pièces annexes : dans l'une le discours de Gettysburg est inscrit sur le mur sud et dans l'autre le discours inaugural de la seconde investiture de Lincoln est inscrite sur le mur nord. Ces inscriptions sont surmontées de peintures murales, représentant un ange (symbole de la vérité), la libération d'un esclave et l'unité entre le Nord et le Sud américain.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Les braves, vivants et morts, qui se battirent ici le consacrèrent bien au-delà de notre faible pouvoir de magnifier ou de minimiser. Le monde ne sera guère attentif à nos paroles, il ne s'en souviendra pas longtemps, mais il ne pourra jamais oublier ce que les hommes firent. C'est à nous les vivants de nous vouer à l'œuvre inachevée que d'autres ont si noblement entreprise. C'est à nous de nous consacrer plus encore à la cause pour laquelle ils offrirent le suprême sacrifice ; c'est à nous de faire en sorte que ces morts ne soient pas morts en vain ; à nous de vouloir qu'avec l'aide de Dieu notre pays renaisse dans la liberté ; à nous de décider que le gouvernement du peuple, par le peuple et pour le peuple, ne disparaîtra jamais de la surface de la terre. »
